Super New moon January 1st and 30th 2014, how will this affect us?

This January we are promised a lot of wonderful activity in the skies above us, which may have an impact on what we do and how we are feeling.

Firstly we have a New Moon occurring on New Year’s day. This will make the 1st January 2014 a particularly auspicious time to plan any changes you want to take place in your life. A New Moon is all about new beginnings and this coupled with it being the start of a new Calendar year means many of us will be looking toward changes we wish to make and projects we wish to start. Try and make any promises to yourself easily achievable, it is not good for our soul to promise to do something that we only stick to for January. Try and word your goals in a positive manner, for example rather than ‘I want to lose weight’ try ‘I am going to eat a healthier diet this January New Moon’ Any New Years resolutions that you do set in motion will be much more likely to reach fruition than previous years due to the added advantage of the New Moon.

This January New Moon will have even more impact in our lives due to the fact that it is a Supermoon or Perigree Moon. A Supermoon or Perigree Moon occurs when the moon is closer to our earth than usual. The moon appears bigger to us at the time of a supermoon. Obviously this is much more prominent at the time of a full moon as we will be more able to see the increase in size. However we will be affected at this New Moon by the fact that it is a super new moon! Super moons are known to bring higher tides than usual and the effect that they have on human and animal behaviour is heightened at the time of a Supermoon.

“The moon may seem bigger although the difference in its distance from Earth is only a few percent at such times,” says Dr. James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center on the space agency’s website. “It is called a supermoon because this is a very noticeable alignment that at first glance would seem to have an effect. The ‘super’ in supermoon is really just the appearance of being closer.”
Supermoons can appear as much as 14% larger in the sky and 30% brighter to our eyes than at their smallest size and brightness.
Diagram from earth sky.org

Richard Nolle, the astrologer, is credited with coining the term supermoon. He defines them as:
“a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth.
“By this definition, a new moon or full moon has to come within 361,863 kilometers (224,851 miles) of our planet, as measured from the centers of the moon and Earth, in order to be a super moon”

“Each month, on the day of the new moon, the Earth, moon and sun are aligned, with the moon in between. This line-up creates wide-ranging tides, known as spring tides. High spring tides climb up especially high, and on the same day low tides plunge especially low.
The January 1 and 30 extra-close new moons will accentuate the spring tide, giving rise to what’s called a perigean spring tide. If you live along an ocean coastline, watch for high tides caused by the two January 2014 new moons – or supermoons.” Earthsky.org

With the amount of rain we are having at the moment it is worth keeping an eye on the weather in case of flooding at the perigrean high tide.

Around each new moon (left) and full moon (right) – when the sun, Earth, and moon are located more or less on a line in space – the range between high and low tides is greatest. These are called spring tides. Earthsky.org

You won’t be able to see the new super moon on January 1 or January 30. At the time of the new moon, the moon hides in the glare of the sun all day long, rising with the sun at sunrise and setting with the sun at sunset. Just because you can’t see this new supermoon doesn’t mean you won’t be able to feel the effects. However in the days following the new moon you will be able to see a small sliver of the moon at dusk in the Western sky.

We have actually got two Supermoons in January as the next new moon will be a supermoon too. This makes January 2014 the only month with two supermoons until January 2018! The second new supermoon occurs on 30th January, only just making it into the month of January! In addition to having super moons in July, two weeks after the year’s nearest new moon on January 1, it’ll be the year’s farthest and smallest full moon on January 16, 2014. This sort of moon is often termed a micro moon.
We will have five supermoons in total during 2014, the latter three moons will be full moons so we will enjoy their full ‘super’ effect! The other supermoons in 2014 will be on July 12, on August 10, and on September 9. The full moon on August 10, 2014, will be the closest supermoon of the year (356,896 kilometers or 221,765 miles from our earth to the moon). The  two super new moons on January 1 and January 30 will not be all that far behind, featuring the year’s second-closest and third-closest supermoons, respectively.
The New Moon on 1st January will be at 10degrees in Capricorn. It will line up with Pluto and Mercury (in Capricorn) whilst squaring Mars in Libra, and Uranus in Aries.
The New Moon in Capricorn may cause feelings to run pretty high and emotions to be a little on the turbulent side. This will be an an energetic new moon, a perfect time for taking action on things that have been lying dormant for a while!
The fabulous Simone Butler from Mooncircles.com has the following to say regarding our Capricorn new super moon.
“The Capricorn New Moon (Jan. 1, 3:14 a.m. PST) catalyzes a grand cross between Mars in Libra, Jupiter in Cancer, Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn.
The planets involved represent strong yang forces, intensified by their presence in action-oriented cardinal signs. Do-or-die Pluto conjuncts the Sun, Moon and Mercury and exactly squares headstrong Mars. This forceful call for evolutionary change can prompt a fresh start, but it can also trigger antagonism and impatience if we’re not careful to channel it wisely.
“Because this powerful energy colors the entire year ahead, we can expect 2014 to be a magnificent, make-it-or-break-it year.
“The good news is, if you’re inclined to cut ties with the past, launch new projects or begin running marathons, this alignment will give you the push you need. The bad news is, if you persist in clinging to old patterns or being less than your authentic self, you’re apt to suffer.
“Complicating the planetary picture, Venus is currently retrograde in Capricorn (Dec. 21 – Jan. 31). Pleasure-loving Venus can feel weighed down in that serious earth sign, but she’s also able to devise effective plans for change, and cement healthy habits in existing relationships (not a great time to start new ones, though).
“Don’t rely overmuch on others’ financial or emotional support during this retrograde, as it’s meant to guide you into your own depths to reclaim your talents, power and self-esteem (although it is a good time to recoup losses or receive money owed to you).
“Through the end of January, you may have to dig deep to find the softer side of love, to unconditionally accept yourself and others—but your efforts will be richly rewarded.”

The new supermoon isn’t all that is happening in our skies during January 2014. Our earth will come the closest to the sun for the year on Jan 4th. At this point we willl be about 91.4 million miles away, this is called perihelion. On average, the distance between the sun and ourselves is about 93 million miles. During this time therefore we may find ourselves more influenced by the male Sun energy. This would be a fabulous time to make some super charged sun water.  Earth reaches aphelion (the farthest distance from the sun) in July.
We will also experience the wonder of a meteor shower in January. The quadrantid meteors reach their peak on January 3rd and will be easily visible as our moon will still be relatively new at this point. At their peak the quadrantids are expected to reach 120 shooting stars an hours so they should make an amazing spectacle.
All in all then January 2014 should be an amazing time. There will be a lot of high energy around so it’s important to channel that energy in ways that are useful to us. As the moon waxes during January we can tune into the energy that is emanating from this source and use it to ensure our thoughts and inspirations started at the new super moon in January reach their fruition.
There are a number of really good books around you can get to find out more information about moon cycles and living in harmony with the moon. One I like is Thomas Poppe:
Moon Time: The Art of Harmony with Nature and Lunar Cycles

Another great guide is Raising With the Moon -- The Complete Guide to Gardening--and Living--by the Signs of the Moon Planting "by the signs" is an ancient tradition carried on by millions of people. This book explains the logic of gardening by the signs of the moon and shows how it works, giving clear and complete instructions for calculating the moon's effect on every aspect of gardening--preparing the soil, cultivating, planting, fertilizing, transplanting, pruning, crafting, controlling weeds and pests, and harvesting. It also explains how the moon effects many other areas of life. No almanac user should be without this comprehensive one-source reference.

Develop an appreciation for the present moment. Seize every second of your life and savor it. Wayne Dyer Quote

You'll seldom experience regret for anything that you've done. It is what you haven't done that will torment you.  The message therefore, is clear. Do it! Develop an appreciation for the present moment.  Seize every second of your life and savour it.  value your present moments.  Using them up in any self-defeating ways means you've lost them forever. Friday 13th unlucky or not? A look at the Pagan history behind Friday thirteenth

Is Friday the thirteenth really unlucky? A look at the ancient Pagan standpoint.

We have been taught to believe that Friday 13th is unlucky, more accidents and ill health happen on this day however many psychologists believe that this is a result of heightened anxiety. This fear even has a name! Fear of Friday the 13th is known as triskaidekaphobes.

Friday 13th was not always considered to be unlucky, and that some people throughout time have found it to be the luckiest day of the year.  Many Pagans think that this day is especially magickal due to the fact that it is the Goddess’ sacred day and the fact that there are thirteen lunar months.

Friday comes from "Freya's Day" or "Frigg's Day. Freya was a Norse Goddess, the goddess of Love and Beauty, and also fertility, war, and wealth. She was the daughter of Njord, and the sister of Frey. Frigg or Freya corresponded to Venus, The goddess of love of the Romans, who named the sixth day of the week In her honor "dies Veneris. Freya was said to bring luck and Friday was considered to be a great day to get married due to her being seen as Goddess of Love.

With the advent of Christianity the myth began that Friday was unlucky. Freya was dismissed as so many Goddesses like her were. When Norse and Germanic tribes converted to Christianity, Freya was banished in shame to a mountaintop and labeled a witch. It was believed that every Friday, the spiteful goddess convened a meeting with eleven other witches, plus the devil – a gathering of thirteen – and plotted ill turns of fate for the coming week. For many centuries in Scandinavia, Friday was known as “Witches’ Sabbath.”

The number 13 in Christianity was believed to bring bad luck because there were 13 people at The Last Supper. Cain slew Abel on a Friday the 13th.

There are many events throughout history that may have sparked the idea that Fridays were unlucky. Many Christians have believed that Friday was unlucky because it was the day of the week when Jesus was crucified. Eve tempted Adam with forbidden fruit on a Friday. The great flood began on a Friday. the Temple of Solomon was destroyed on a Friday. In the early days of Rome, Friday was execution day. In Britain, Friday became the Hangman’s Day. Black Friday has been associated with stock market crashes and other disasters since the 1800s. So a lot of events happened to make people believe Friday the thirteenth was unlucky.

The ancient Egyptians associated the number thirteen with immortality -- there were twelve steps on the ladder to eternal life and knowledge; the thirteenth step meant going through death into everlasting life. In Rome, it was traditional to have thirteen guests to be present at weddings. In the Hebrew faith, age thirteen is when a young man or woman is finally considered an adult. Finally, thirteen has a strong association with the moon for many of us. There are thirteen lunar cycles each year, and many of us celebrate the full moons. Thirteen is the traditional number of witches in a coven. Also, in Goddess and pagan lore, the Number 19 represents the sacred number of the Goddess. Friday the 13th combines the individual sacred goddess numbers of "6" and "13" and when these two numbers are added, you get the Number 19. So we see in ancient Pagan religions Friday the thirteenth being actually a pretty lucky day.
Thirteen, a goddess number, is one beyond beyond twelve, and, in the eyes of the new "solar" world order, symbolised a move away from harmony and completion into the "evil" of chaos. The church decided that the Goddess led number 13 should be deemed unlucky. There are 12 months in the solar-based Julian and the Church-created Gregorian calendars, a perfect, male number.

You can see therefore from all these reasons why it would seem that Friday 13th would appear to be unlucky from some points of view.

As Pagans we can continue to believe that Friday, Freya’s day is a lucky day of the Goddess and this combined with the sacred number 13 makes it doubly auspicious, so enjoy this day! Celebrate Friday 13th, may the luck of the Goddess be with you today and always!

You are the power in your world. Louise Hay

This is another quote on the subject of manifesting your dreams and the importance of having a positive attitude to life.

"You are the power in your world! You get to have whatever you choose to think" Louise Hay

Louise Hay puts the importance of a positive mental attitude into simple succinct words. I thought I would give this one a wintry theme as well to celebrate the Winter Solstice.

The wonderful Louise Hay writes lots of beautiful words including some fabulous positive affirmations.

Below are some of the wonderful publications that Louise Hay has written including books and positive affirmation cards.

This is one of her positive affirmation cards:

Everything in my life works, now and forevermore.

This is from the pack from Louise Hay
Power Thought Cards (Beautiful Card Deck)
What a wonderful affirmation from Louise Hay to repeat on a regular basis! You can print both of these affirmations if you like and place them somewhere where you will see them regularly.

We are Divine enough to ask and we are important enough to receive. Wayne Dyer positive inspirational quote

We are Divine enough to ask and we are important enough to receive.
I have posted these words before but I so love Wayne Dyer quotes I have made another picture this time with a wintry theme for the celebration of the Winter Solstice

Wayne Dyer has such succinct and wonderful inspirational words I love everything that he writes. He tells us that we are important enough to ask for what we want in life and be confident that we can achieve our heart's desires.

His latest book is Wishes Fulfilled: Mastering the Art of Manifesting which is about manifesting your dreams. In it he explains the process of bringing abundance into your life. It is important when attracting good things into your life to be clear about your intention and then ask the universe for that intention to be fulfilled. If you are dedicated to your intention and ask for it with passion then there is nothing stopping you from it coming true.

Wayne Dyer has these words to say on the subject of enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
The presence of passion within you is the greatest gift you can receive. And when it’s aligned with Spirit, treat it as a miracle, doing everything you can to hold on to it. I feel this way about the creation of my books. I’ve learned over the years that when I go to that place of passion within me, there’s no force in the universe that can interfere with my completing a project. My life is consumed by the passion I feel for what I’m doing—yet I know that as long as I feel this, I’m experiencing the God within.

December full moon: Christmas Moon, Snow Moon, Cold Moon, Family Moon

Our moon is full this year on December 17th 2013 . Full moon times are given below.

The Native American tribes are where many of our names for moon months originate. The Native Americans reckoned time by the different months of the year and thus the New and Full Moons were of upmost importance to them. Their new year began in March and was divided into thirteen moons. At each new moon a big feast was held which was named often for the fruits in season or the game that was hunted for their food at this time.  The beginning of the year in March was noted with a huge feast called the Moon Festival, or Deer Festival. Each moon month brought with it it’s own particular characteristics and it’s own opportunities for spiritual growth.

You can use each particular moon month in the same way. Think about what the December moon means to you and what your hopes and dreams are for this month. For me the December Moon would be called ‘Family Moon’ As a Pagan family we celebrate both Yule and also Christmas as a time to be with family. I love the fact that for those times you can just have quality time with your family with no outside distractions.

A lot of the moon names in December centre around the weather as you would expect! December is the month where it did really turn cold in many areas around our earth and so the names such as Snow Moon, Cold Moon and Bitter Moon arose. In Cherokee tradition, Vsgiyi, the spirit being or “Snow Man”, brings cold and snow to our earth. The earth rests until the rebirth of the seasons in the Windy Moon in March. Although here in England at the moment it is still incredibly mild, I have hardly had my heating on which is great for my fuel bills!

The December moon is also commonly known as the long nights moon as this is the closest moon to our Winter Solstice or Yule when we will have the longest night and the shortest day. The moon will be above the horizon for the longest amount of time she has a high trajectory across the sky because she is opposite a low Sun. This month of December therefore gives us lots of opportunities for observing her beauty!

The old English name of Oak moon or ‘Moon Before the Yule Oak‘ occurred because this was the time of the Oak King’s re-birth. He defeats the Holly King at Yule and rules over the next 6 months, seeing the light and warmth eventually returning to the earth. This name of Oak Moon is  often adopted in Pagan cultures to define the December Moon

Here are some common names for the moon around the world:

American                        Christmas Moon
Chinese                          Bitter Moon
Cherokee                        Snow Moon
Choktaw                         Moon of the Bears
Algonquian                      Cold Moon
Dakatah Sioux                 Twelth Moon
Celtic                              Cold Moon
English                            Oak Moon
Pagan                              Long Night Moon
Indian                              Wolf Moon, Big Moon

Southern Hemisphere moon names for December are often named for the spring flowers and vegetables that are starting to appear in that part of the world. Thus common names for the Southern hemisphere December moon are: Strawberry Moon, Honey Moon, Rose Moon

I found an alternative for the Choktaw December Moon being Peach Moon. I can't find any information as to why it would be called Peach Moon in the middle of winter! Does anybody have any ideas?!

Across many traditions December has always been an important month. We see of course the Solstice or Yule on the 21st originating from ancient Celtic origins. Then we have Christmas on the 25th, the day given to the birth of Christ in Christian tradition. It was the tenth month on the old Roman calendar and the time of Saturnalia involving much feasting. The old Norman word is Heilagmanoth, or Holy Month is so called because of its large number of sacred festivals. This moon was called Heilagmonth Moon for this reason. In Jewish tradition December is the time for the festival of lights. On the old Tibetan calendar, December 1 was the beginning of a new year, so this was the first Full Moon of their year. In Mexico, the ancient Mayan goddess Ixchel is still honored in southern Mexico today with processions and rituals that bless boats and fields. In Japan, it was the time when the hiding Sun goddess Amaterasu came out of her cave.

As well as looking at the different moon names for the month of December and finding the one which resonates most with you, it is also useful to look at the characteristics of the moon in the month in which you were born. If you were born during the month of the December Moon you often have a colder exterior but with a glowing warm heart beneath. Given the opportunity this warm inner strength will radiate outwards and affect all those that come into contact with you. You have faced adversity and may continue to do so but your warm inner strength gives you the power to work through whatever life throws at you.

In honour of the importance of this December Moon to so many cultures around the world I have found a chant you might like to use on the night of the full moon.

Enjoy the wonderful glory of the full moon in December as she graces our skies from sunset to sunrise. Our moon will never be in the sky as long as she is in December so make the most of her healing light! Decide which qualities of the December Moon you would like to include in any rituals you carry out this  month. I will be performing a ritual to strengthen family bonds and security.
