What name would you like to give the moon for May 2013?

Moon names for May and moon times for May 2013

Our Moon will be full this year on May 25th. A special month for it is my birthday! Extra extra special as we have a partial lunar eclipse!!

Moon names for May generally concentrate on the fact that Mother Nature is in her blooming phase and the crops and flowers all around us are growing.

The North American Indian tribes all had a different name for the May full moon; these were largely based upon what crops needed planting at this time on the wheel of the year. Here are some that I have come across: Cherokee: Planting Moon, Choctaw: Panther Moon, Daktah Sioux: Moon When Leaves Are Green, Moon To Plant, Algonquin: Corn Planting Moon, milk Moon.

We see flowers growing all around us right now and thus the American backwoods tradition called May full moon the flower moon. In the full moon light of this month, the flowers are said to grow at night, and dance in honour of the moon. Spring is a little late in England this year and still quite cold but the flowers are making a brave show of it!  I’m quite sure they are dancing their way through the days and nights when we are not looking!

Chinese names for the May moon are the Dragon Moon and the Pestilent Moon. At this time of year Chung K'uei the great spiritual chaser of demons is honored. The commemoration of Buddha's enlightenment occurs on the day of the Full Moon in May.

The Anglo- Saxons called the May full moon Thrimilcmonath, or
Thrice Milk Month, because cows give milk three times a day during May.

The Dyad moon is a name popular with the Pagan tradition. The name Dyad refers to a pair of beings . Symbolically it can represent the unity of the God, and Goddess; Their marriage, and the consummation of it on Earth. It is a time of ultimate harmony when opposites attract and become as one.

Cletic: Growing Moon, English Medieval: Hare Moon, Pagan: Grass Moon. Other names are the Strawberry Moon, Frogs Return Moon, Winnemanoth (Joy Month), and Moon When the Ponies Shed and the Merry Moon.

A nice idea is to pick a name that resonates with you and mediate on that name and see what images come to mind.

The full moon is always a time of heightened energy and the energy for May 2013 will be particularly strong as we have a partial lunar eclipse. We may feel somewhat agitated at this time therefore it is important to plan for this and to try and put that excess energy to good use.  Here is what Molly Hall has to say about the full moon this month:

“It’s a Full Moon and (partial) Lunar eclipse in Scorpio…Scorpio, ruled by Pluto, is about stripping away artifice, what’s false, corrupted and diseased…”
“In these days before the eclipse, we can tune in deeply, and be alert to points of tension…Eclipses can sometimes be destabilizing in some way. But breaking apart could be the very thing that leads to true healing, inner treasure or solid footing.”
“…Pluto shines light in the darkness, even where we’re afraid to look. There could be catharsis as pent up emotions are released, secrets revealed or corruption exposed.”

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves into the earth’s shadow. The eclipse will occur on May 25th at 12:10 AM EDT, so make sure you have your binoculars at the ready.

So, happy viewing the eclipse, I hope you manage the moon energy OK, I always find it a tricky time so I'm going to try and channel my energy into writing some more articles.
Full moon blessings to you, Alison
