Moon times, phases and names for June 2015

I am looking forward to the power of the full moon shortly, can you feel the energy increasing? Here are the moon phases for June 2015 for you so that you can plan your month accordingly. Living life within the phases of the moon allows your life to flow with much greater eases. As the moon wanes during the first week in June try to spend the time withdrawing a little, contemplating more and perhaps de cluttering your life a little. At the new moon on the 18th June this is a perfect time to start new projects and as the moon waxes during the second half of June you may find you have more energy so use that energy to push projects forward, connect with friends and family and be creative.

This moon in June was popularly called the Strawberry Moon or Rose Moon because of the time of the year. This full moon was seen as very spiritual by Buddhists as it was the full moon when Buddha died and received enlightenment. Bright Moon,  Seed Moon and Planting Moon are other popular names. Our ancestors lived their lives a lot more in tune with the moon and we have much to learn from their cultures.

Practising mindfulness during the Leonids meteor shower

Tonight I will be practising mindfulness watching the Leonids meteor shower in my back garden under a warm blanket!

The Leonids meteors can be seen at their peak around the 16th to the 18th November. They are one of the most impressive showers to observe, with around 40 meteors per hour at their peak.  This year only a modest 10-15 have been predicted however. The shower itself has a cyclical peak year every 33 years where hundreds of meteors can be seen each year, the last of these was in 2001, lets look forward to 2034 then! Our crescent waning moon is at 25% of her brightness at the moment so that should make for fairly good viewing of this impressive meteor shower.

In order to locate the Leonids, look in the direction of the constellation Leo, the best time is just after midnight. The brightest object in the sky right now, the planet Jupiter is also near the radiant point which should make it easier to locate where the meteors will be originating.

earthsky.org
Here are some viewing tips from earthsky.org

“Here’s another tip regarding the radiant point. As darkness falls in mid-November, the radiant point of the shower is below your horizon, as seen from all parts of Earth. As the Earth turns, the constellation Leo the Lion – carrying the meteor shower radiant point – will rise over your eastern horizon. Expect to see the constellation Leo in the east around midnight. That’s why the Leonids begin to pick up steam after the midnight hour!
Just remember, you don’t have to locate a meteor shower radiant to watch the meteor shower.
But if the radiant isn’t in the sky, you won’t see as many meteors. That means you should watch the Leonid shower tonight, from late evening (November 17) until dawn (November 18).
As a general rule, the higher the meteor shower radiant climbs in your sky, the more meteors that you’re likely to see. The radiant for the Leonids is highest up during the dark hour before dawn, offering, perhaps, 10-15 meteors per hour. The moon may marginally interfere with the show, but not enough to worry about. You should see at least a sprinkling meteors, if you watch for an hour or so.

What else can you see on the night of the 2014 Leonids peak? The radiant for the Leonids is near the star Algieba in Leo. This is not Leo the Lion’s brightest star. That distinction goes to Leo’s star Regulus. Watch for both of these stars.
accuweather.com
Both Algieba and Regulus belong to a noticeable pattern on the sky’s dome, in the shape of a backwards question mark. This pattern is called “the Sickle.” The paths of Leonid meteors can be traced backwards to the Sickle pattern, which is a famous asterism – or noticeable star pattern – within the constellation Leo.”
Watching meteors fly through our night sky can be an intensely spiritual experience. The wonder of a shooting star is something that stirs a deep emotion within us. Spending an hour or two watching a shower is a wonderful way of really practicing a meditative mindfulness, try to really concentrate on the night sky and empty your mind of all other thoughts. Become completely absorbed in what is happening in the heavens above you and allow yourself to be almost transported to that other plane as if you yourself were in amongst the shooting stars. As you still your mind you will feel it is just you and the night sky and it is a wonderful feeling. Make sure you wrap up warm though and enjoy your wonderful mindful meteors!
Wishing on a shooting star! Blessings, Alison xxx

"The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation. Steve Maraboli Inspirational quote

"The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realise that the situation is over, you cannot move forward." Steve Maraboli

Wise words from Steve Maraboli, we sometimes do indeed need to forgive ourselves and the situation before we can move forwards. The waning moon is the best time if you need to walk away from a situation you have realised is over and you need to move forward from. Doing so at the time of the waning moon will make a difficult situation easier as you will be working with nature on your side. These things are never easy but if at least we can involve the natural forces of nature that we have to hand we can make life easier for ourselves.

blessings to you, Alison

Business Planning in tune with the moon. Grow your business by following the cycles of the moon.

Business Planning in tune with the moon.

Have you ever thought about how you could make your business more efficient by following the moon’s phases? As our moon moves through her cycles of waxing and waning the changes in energy that we feel may be applied to all walks of life. We often read about how we should be starting new projects in the new moon and cleansing our lives of clutter during the waning moon. However applying these principles to the business world can be quite a challenge!

Running a business is often quite a tight operation. We often cannot decide that we would like to do filing one day just because the moon is right for us to do it on that day. However with a little forward thinking if we are able to manipulate schedules just a little you may be surprised at the results that you obtain. Most well run businesses have an annual and monthly business plan. We may then introduce within that monthly plan the times when it is best to surge ahead with growth, i.e. at the time of the waxing moon vs. the times when it is best to be getting on with the quieter parts of the business, i.e. at the time of the waning moon.

The new moon marks the beginning of the moon’s cycle. This should be the beginning of any new ideas for your business. This is the time to have strategy meetings, call together different departments to have brain storming ideas, you will find everyone is much more creative at this time of the new moon and fabulous ideas and visions for the future may be sown now. Any planning or visionary ideas should be undertaken at the new moon, including financial planning of any sort.

Ideas put forward during the new moon may then be expanded on during the phases of the waxing moon, particularly during the waxing crescent moon and the first quarter moon when the new moon energy is still recent.  Projects will gain momentum and gather speed until you see them reach fruition as we move from the waxing gibbous moon into the full moon. The waxing moon phase is all about action in the business world, it is about putting yourself out there, full throttle. Selling, putting together advertising campaigns, buying materials, recruiting new staff, holding conferences, finding new premises, writing new blog posts and articles, creating new programs, public relations, collaborations with other ventures, marketing strategies, all these activities should be done when the moon is waxing.

When the moon reaches her full moon phase she is at her peak. This phase only lasts three days but it is a very intense time that you should be prepared for. Things may be a bit fraught but also filled with a highly charged energy. Avoid making big or complicated decisions at this crucial time but instead use the charged energy to complete any tasks that need finishing.

The moon begins to wane after her big crescendo. This is the time to pull back a little and look to internal affairs of your business. Ensure that all your bookkeeping, tax and financial affairs are in order. If tax returns are due the waning moon is the time to complete them.  If any staff dismissals are to be made now is the best time to do it to avoid too much negativity. Maintenance of the building you are in should be looked at now and any jobs attended to. Send out invoices, file and organize, carry out market research, and clear your desk of clutter: you will feel much better for it and be much more productive during the new moon! Use the waning crescent moon phase to start to prepare for the new moon and the beginning of a new cycle, what will your intentions be for the coming month?

Of course this can only be a guideline. If you are in the business of selling cars you are going to be pushing hard to sell cars all month long. This just gives you a way of looking at your overall business, it is possible with a little forethought to change some of the ways in which you complete tasks. You will find that you achieve better results and experience less stress when you fine tune your daily routines and activities to the phases of the moon. Not only will your business run more efficiently and stress free but you will GROW your business by following this simple plan! Worth having a try then isn’t it?

Happy business planning, wishing you lots of success, Alison xxx

Phases of the Moon September 2013- living a month in tune with the moon

Phases of the Moon September 2013- living a month in tune with the moon

The revolution of the Moon around the Earth makes the Moon appear as if it is changing shape in the sky. This is caused by the different angles from which we see the bright part of the Moon's surface. These are called phases of the Moon. Of course, the Moon doesn't generate any light itself; it just reflects the light of the Sun. The Moon passes through four major shapes during a cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days.  We know that these phases of the moon we call them waxing and waning have a profound affect on us and on all life on earth therefore it is useful to know which phase our moon is at during the month.

So September starts off for us with a waning moon, a time for inward reflection, perhaps a last minute clearout of a few kitchen cupboards you have been meaning to do!

We then have a new moon on Thu 5 Sep
12.37 BST. This new moon in September would be a perfect time for the start of a new project. The new moon is followed by a flourishing time of growth, as the moon grows in fullness so do our ideas. September is a time of the harvest, there is richness everywhere as the ground swells in fertility, let this lend fertility to your ideas and passions as you push forward with new ideas and projects. Perhaps you have a fence you have been meaning to fix in the garden or a new play area you were going to build for your children?

The Full moon in September is also known as the Harvest Moon or the Barley Moon. The harvesters would gain extra time in the fields by the light of the harvest moon. This is a time of organizing and preparing for the coming months. Perhaps you would like to use this time to decide what you would like to start to prepare for.

These are the times for the full moon around the world:

Three days after the full moon  our moon starts to wane again. Time to clear away all the debris from the play area you built!

Enjoy the waxing and waning of the moon cycles in September 2013. You will find that by living your life in tune with these natural rhythms life runs a lot more smoothly, you and your family are happier, less stressed and a lot more seems to get accomlished. Don't just take my word for it however, try it for a month and let me know if it works for you!

Waning Moon, banish those unwanted situations with a soothing aromatherapy bath.

From three days after the  Full Moon until the Dark Moon, the Moon is Waning and getting smaller. As it recedes, and appears to diminish, this is the perfect time to think about banishing unwanted situations, harmful relationships and associations, and breaking bad habits. The waning moon is a good time to take stock of our current situation and give ourselves plenty of time to rest and re-cuperate. If we can make time to meditate the this is a wonderful time to do it. We will often discover via mediation what it is that we perhaps need to let go of in our lives. The waning moon makes it much easier to let go of anything that no longer serves us or that is perhaps actually causing us emotional harm.

Taking a soothing bath is a wonderful time to reflect upon what it is in our lives that needs banishing. Prepare in advance to have some special time to yourself to do this and make it a ritual 'you time' experience. Make sure that the rest of the family know that you are not to be disturbed during your bathing experience. There is a wonderful blend of bathing salts with dead sea salts and essential oils available on the Astarte-Moon website that will help you have a wonderful bathing experience. You can make these bathing salts part of your bathing ritual.

Waning moon Astarte Moon bath salts
Allow your cares to melt away with these specially prepared Waning Moon Dead sea Bath salts. The time of the waning moon is the perfect time to allow yourself time to de-stress and allow your cares to melt away with these specially prepared Waning Moon Dead sea Bath salts. The time of the waning moon is the perfect time to allow yourself time to de-stress and relax. It is a particularly good time to think about what you need to let go in your life in order to lead a more fulfilled and stress free existence. What better time to do this than when you are having a wonderful soak in the bath. So light a few candles, step into your oasis of calm and meditate for a few moments on what might be holding you back from your future happiness.

As you rise out of the bath, rinse yourself down with some cooler water and imagine your worries and anything that is holding you back simply washing away down the plug hold of your back. You can do this exercise anytime that you need to of course but when the moon is waning and getting smaller to our vision this is a particularly good time to do this and you will find that this exercise is more powerful.

These salts contain a rose quartz crystal that I have cleansed with the healing waters from the Chalice well at Glastonbury. You may like to place this rose quartz beside your bath and feel it's healing energy do it's work whilst you are relaxing.

This wonderful blend contains Natural Essential oils Patchouli, Orange and Jasmine. A perfect combination to ensure total relaxation. The salts come packaged in a beautiful organza bag so they make a perfect give as well as wonderful treat for yourself.
Treat yourself this waning moon, be pampered and banish all of those unwanted situations. Emerge from your wonderful aromatherapy bath a new you, leaving all your troubles and harmful associations behind with your bath water!
Waning moon blessings of soothing love to you,

Moon Phases for August 2013. How to plan your life as the moon waxes and wanes.

Moon Phases for August 2013 for you. Here are the moon phases for next month so that you can plan your month ahead and follow nature's ebb and flow.

August starts off with a waning moon so a last chance to do a bit of clearing out and tidying up around the house and garden maybe before the new moon on 6th/7th August. The exact date varies depending which time zone you are in. The August waxing moon phase then gives you an ideal time to perhaps get a new project off the ground. Whilst we are still enjoying the last month of summer perhaps you have a project you would like to complete in the garden before the nights start drawing in or it starts to get just a bit colder. I always feel I have a bit more energy when the nights are lighter so make the most of the increased daylight coupled with the moon's waxing strength this August.

August 20th/21st sees the full moon when we can bask in her glory and enjoy the powerful energy she will bring for a few days. She will rise shortly after sunset on 20th August and will be visible in the sky for the whole of the night. Sunset on 20th August is around 20 10 BST. Following the full moon phase she will begin to wane throughout the rest of August. We can use that time for inward reflection, for mediation, rest and recuperation in readiness for the next waxing phase of the moon. We sometimes get some quite hot days at the end of August so it is good to use those hot days in the waning moon to take it easy and rest. Use the time in quieter activities. Often you carry out  a space clearing waning moon exercise that doesn't require a lot of physical activities such as sorting out old photographs or deleting files on your computer. I have been doing quite a lot of that during the hot days that we have been having recently when I need to feel useful but am too hot to do anything too strenuous!

The moon dates for the different moon phases for August 2013 are:
New moon
August 6/7, 2013
First quarter
August 14, 2013
Full moon
August 20/21, 2013
Last quarter
August 28, 2013

I hope you find this useful in planning your month and your activities accordingly.

I hope you enjoy the August moon as she waxes and wanes and that you find yourself waxing and waning alongside her. As always the key is to find ourselves in balance with nature, our lives will become much easier because of this, as we follow the ebb and flow until it becomes second nature to do so.

May the light of the moon always light your way and be in your heart,  blessings, Alison

Basic overview on the waxing and waning phases of the moon

A basic overview on the phases of the moon.

I have just decided to write a quick post on the basic phases of the moon. The simplest way of looking at the moon is to split the phases into four. I apologise to those of you who already know this but I'm thinking there will be some people who come across this blog for whom this might be useful information. Do let me know if there is any particular moon information you would like me to write about, I'm trying to delve into particular aspects on the affect that our moon has on our lives as I find it very fascinating!

The four phases our moon goes through may be seen to us as follows:
  • ·      It starts as a new moon when it can barely be seen in our sky.
  • ·      It then begins to grow which is called waxing.
  • ·      The moon then reaches it’s fullest point when it is perfectly round, this is a full moon.
  • ·      After this the moon appears to us to grow smaller, this is call waning.

All these different stages: full moon, waxing moon (growing), waning moon (diminishing) and new moon (when you can barely it in the sky) can have an effect on our moods and our wellbeing. We can use the phases of the moon in our daily lives and learn to live in tune with the moon. The new moon is perfect for starting new projects and new ventures. As the moon is waxing this is a perfect time for any sort of growth and nurturing in our lives. At the full moon we may feel that we have an excess of energy thus it is important to channel that energy into something useful. As the moon begins to wane we may find we become more introspective and mediative; we can use this time to look within and prepare for the next moon cycle.

If we care to look deeper into the moon's cycle we can see that it may be more precisely split into nine phases. These are the new moon when the moon is barely visible to us, the spark of our inspiration. We then move into the waxing crescent moon, bring life to new ideas, followed by the waxing half moon; a period of growth and opportunity. The last phase before the full moon is the gibbous moon, a time of expression; with the full moon bringing a fulfilment of plans and heightened energy.

The moon then begins to wane, firstly with the disseminating moon as we start to look inwards, followed by the waning half moon bringing transformation as a result of that reflection. The very last sliver of the moon that we see in the sky is called the balsamic moon, this is a perfect moon for letting go of all that no longer serves us. Lastly we have the dark of the moon when we see no moon at all. This moon is for understanding on a very deep level, assimilating all the knowledge that we have gained from our inward thinking during the waning moon.

Having a knowledge of the moon's cycles gives us an insight into how our natural instincts work. We can learn a lot by observing these and going with nature's natural rythyms. If we observe ourselves for example slowing down at the waning moon period we should allow ourselves the space to do that. Our bodies know what is right for us and we need to listen to what our bodies are telling us is right for us. We need that time of reflection and it will help us when the time comes to speed up again. By keeping in tune with lunar cycles in this way we will have happier, more fulfilled and more efficient lives.

Starlight and moonbeam blessings to you,
Alison

Moon phases for July 2013, full moon 22nd July

Here are the moon phases for July 2013 for you so that you can be prepared! For once I am ahead of myself writing this post on 13th June, usually it is right at the end of the month and I suddenly realise I have not posted the moon phases for the coming month!

So in July we have the new moon on 8th July and the full moon on 22nd July. Perhaps you can start a new project on the new moon on 8th July to follow through during the waxing moon phase, with an aim to completing it at the full moon on the 22nd. You will find that it is easier to follow nature's natural rhythm in this way, as the moon expands in size, so we can use this increase in energy we may feel to good use in projects we may wish to accomplish, that bit of DIY that has been unfinished for months maybe!

Following the full moon on the 22nd the moon begins begin to wane and decrease in size. This is the time for us to rest and re-cuperate. Meditating more during this period will be especially beneficial. Taking good care of yourself is important now; it is OK to go with the flow, you may not have so much energy for the two weeks following the 22nd July and that is fine. Resting now will mean that you have more to give following the next new moon in August 2013. Working with nature rather than against her will lead to a more relaxed, happier and ultimately more efficient you.  Moon blessings to you, Alison xx

Why should you pay attention to the phases of the moon?

Why should you pay attention to the phases of the moon?

Have you ever wondered how the cycle of the moon might be affecting you? Do you ever wonder why some weeks you feel full of energy and others you struggle to get even basic tasks completed? How about your children, do they behave differently at different times throughout a month? Interestingly, some of it could be related to the cycle of the moon.

We have all heard stories about the full moon making people go a little crazy. Indeed the word lunatic is derived from the latin word for moon: luna. Crime statistics and hospital admissions are raised during the time of the full moon. At the time of the full moon, hospital accident and emergency units see about 10% more patients. 80% of casualty nurses and 64% of doctors believe the moon adversely affects patient. According to a US study murders - many apparently motiveless - trebled around the time of the full moon. (Daily Mail Dec 2000) Similarly insurance companies report an increase in accidents over this time of the full moon.

At different times of the month the moon gets larger, this is called waxing; or smaller, this is called waning. All these different stages: full moon, waxing moon (growing), waning moon (diminishing) and new moon (when you can’t see it in the sky) can have an effect on our moods and our wellbeing.

There are a number of reasons experts give as to why the changes in the size of the moon may have an affect on us and all of our planet. The change in the number of positive versus negative ions in the atmosphere may affect us, (higher at the full moon). Similarly the moon’s gravitational pull on our bodies may affect hormone production and fluid flow within our bodies. (Independent June 2013) Experts such as Rudolf Steiner saw how important water increase/decrease was to the growth of plants and started biodynamic and lunar gardening back in 1924. (www.moongrow.com) Ute York, in her book "Living by the Moon" says “The old-time gardeners say, "With the waxing of the moon, the earth exhales. " When the sap in the plants rise, the force first goes into the growth above ground. Thus, you should do all activities with plants that bear fruit above ground during a waxing moon. With the waning of the moon, the earth inhales. Then, the sap primarily goes down toward the roots. Thus, the waning moon is a good time for pruning, multiplying, fertilizing, watering, harvesting, and controlling parasites and weeds” Gardeners have also combined a knowledge of astrology with lunar cycles to further fine tune what to plant when and how to care for their plants.
In the same way that plants absorb moisture and retain it at the full moon so do our bodies; this has a particular effect in the brain where the cells are trying to expand in the fixed area of the skull. “It has been shown that at the time of the Full Moon, and especially during a lunar eclipse, the surface tension of all fluids is increased (the molecular cohesive forces of the surface of any fluid). Because our bodies consist largely of water, this increase in molecular tension is bound to produce a biochemical effect upon our bodies. Furthermore, our bodies tend to take on and hold larger quantities of water during the Full Moon phase each month. The skull, being the only area of the body that cannot readily expand with increased fluid pressure, therefore exerts greater pressure upon the brain cells, which ultimately affect our behavior patterns. (Jansky, Carl, Interpreting the Eclipses)

A new study from the Graduate School of Medicine at Kyoto University says it's down to changes in the geomagnetic field. The researchers say geomagnetic activity drops by around 4 per cent for the seven days leading up to a full moon, then increases by a similar amount after.

"We think moonlight increases the sensitivity of animals' magneto reception," they say. "We propose a hypothesis that animals respond to the full moon because of changes in geomagnetic fields." How that affects behaviour is not clear but one suggestion is that changes in the electromagnetic field disrupt the nocturnal production of melatonin in the pineal gland. Melatonin helps regulate other hormones and maintains the body's circadian rhythm – the "internal 24-hour clock" – and its production is affected by light. (Independent June 2013)

In ancient times before modern medicine, synthetic hormones and electric lighting we were much more governed by nature and would follow nature’s natural rhythms. Women would menstruate at the same time, the time of the dark moon when we see no moon in our sky at all and would often retire to the ‘moon lodge’ or ‘red tent’ to do quiet activities together. Sounds like a good plan doesn’t it?!

We may no longer live in ancient times but that doesn’t mean we cannot follow our body’s and nature’s natural way of being. Life is busy and sometimes it feels like we are constantly running from one day to the next with no differential between the days. Following the moon’s schedule teaches us that it is OK to slow down sometimes and change the pace a little.

The new moon is a great time for starting a new project; for example, I decided to get to work on this article at the time of the new moon! When the moon is waxing we tend to have more energy, it is easier to get tasks done and projects completed. At the full moon we may have an excess of energy and feel somewhat restless, it is a good idea to try and channel that energy into something worthwhile, going down the gym maybe. When the moon is waning we may have a little less energy, it is OK during this time to give ourselves time to relax and re-juvenate, perhaps spend more time in meditation. The time you allow yourself now will be well spent as you will have more energy to spend in the coming weeks of the waxing moon.

Following your body’s natural need to go along with the rhythm of nature and the moon this way and ‘going with the flow’ will make you feel more relaxed and happier overall. You will probably find in the long run that allowing yourself time to slow down in the waning weeks will give you more time in the waxing weeks as you are not constantly pushing yourself.

I have been keeping a note of the moon phases, (there is a constant icon on www.astartemoonblog.com which tells us exactly what stage our moon is at) and trying to keep to the waxing/waning moon cycle and since doing this I feel I have been much more productive overall, less exhausted than I used to be, and happier! I also don’t beat myself up on those days when I haven’t been as productive as perhaps previously I would have done.  Following the phases of the moon teaches us that it is OK to have days of being more ‘up’ than others and that good days will follow the not so good, you just have to trust that they will, that is the cycle.

Believing and using this moon cycle has made a big difference to my life and I hope it will to yours.
